Description

LIFE WITH BIRDS is a web-comic strip about living with pet birds. The story can be funny, sad or heartwarming. It's a mix between personal experience and wild imagination of my life as an artist and a bird parent. All the characters in my comic are based on the real birds that I have/had. New comic is released once in 2 weeks here. Special bird comics (full page, several pages long) are posted on my Patreon for patrons only.

Character Introduction

It's time to introduce you to my birdie characters. There are 6 lovebirds, 3 quails and 6 finches. I drew with red ink the parts to show each character's special traits. This way you will be able to tell who is who on the comic.

For new visitors of my comic blog who have never known that those characters are inspired from the real bird pets I have/had, have a look at those photos below. I have written a short description about their characters too. :)

Bird webcomic about living with finches and lovebird parrots. Drawn in yonkoma manga comic strip style. It can be funny, sad or heart warming. Art by Emmil Thomas.

1.) Pipi.
My little sweetheart, who is just as big as my thumb, has a human like personality. If you think finches are boring, wait until you play with her. She has all the curiosity and expressions like us, humans. There's so much love in her tiny body more than you can imagine. She's the most bonded bird with me now after Pocky  has gone to heaven. Pipi was the youngest baby of 5 chicks found inside a fallen nest. I couldn't save her 4 siblings. Only her survived. Pipi is called nanny on the comics sometimes because she has helped me raised 1 lovebird (Pepe) and 5 other finches.

You can see more of Pipi pics on this album.

2.) Pocky.
My forever love, my mini lovebird. He always looked smiling on any occasions. He was very bonded with me. He would prefer being inside my t-shirt to being in a 3x3x3 meter colony cage with the other lovebirds. He was so cute that God couldn't stand missing him from His side for more than just a year. There are many scripts for Pocky on my comic but I just couldn't draw it yet; they will all make me cry. Maybe years later when my wound from losing him has healed. Pocky is Pence's son. Pocky has 1 older bro, Peewee from same clutch and 1 older sis, Papao from different clutch. Their mom, Pico, has escaped and never came back.

You can see more of Pocky pics on this album.

3.) Pepe.
Pepe is the son of Pence and Papao. He's what some people will brand as abomination because Papao is Pence's daughter with his fugitive wife, Pico. But I love him very much and he loves me too, that's what matters. :) Pepe is a major character on my comic besides Pocky and Pipi. Pepe had a gray mask with a dark line of feather just above his eye rings when he was a baby. It made him look like he has eyebrows. :D And thanks to these eyebrows, he looked grumpy all the time. XD He has molted into adult now, his mask gets dark so we can't see the eyebrows anymore. Pepe is a very high spirited bird that doesn't like cuddles and kisses unless when he's sleepy. No, he's not bitey, just not cuddly. He prefers playing to cuddling. The only bird of mine that's interested in bird toys from stores.

You can see more of Pepe pics on this album.

4.)  Peewee and Pippin.
I call this two as The laying couple. They are the only lovebirds of mine that are willing to be flipped and they enjoy being tickled on that position. Peewee is Pepe's uncle. Peewee is small but not a dwarf. He's a sweet bird, just like his GF, Pippin. Peewee is a smart ass, easy going guy that sometimes go unnoticeable due to the popularity of the rest of his family members. Pippin is a shy but really sweet well behaved lovebird. She always looks so chunky and cheerful. Due to her weak legs, she can't mate. But Peewee still loves her the same. :)

You can see more of Peewee & Pippin pics on this album.

5.) Papao and Pence.
Papao is Pence's daughter (first kid) from his wife, Pico, who escaped in 2013. After Pence was single again, he & Papao have become a couple (they used to live in 1 big outdoor colony cage). Papao laid some eggs. Despite of my efforts boiling the eggs every time one is laid, I still missed one and thus Pepe hatched into this world. Papao is a manifestation of pride. She's the queen of the colony, a sadist, bully of all lovebirds. Pence is a Casanova, a slave to every female bird he lays his eyes on. Pence and Papao are the only lovebirds of mine who like bathing very much. They will jump into their bath bowl and make sure all feathers wet from head to tail. :)

You can see more of Papao and Pence pics on this album.

6.) Pyo, Pyu, Pya.
The three quails I raised since they were 1 day old chicks. They have crossed the rainbow bridge too in 2014, but I will keep them alive in comic. They won't be spirits with a halo floating above their heads. They were quite tamed for quails. They would take treats from my hand and let me pet them but that's it. They were not bonded with me. Pya was the only girl who later chose to be with Pyo and left Captain Pyu single. These three were Japonica cortunix quails who were usually raised for eggs and meat. They lived in 1 meter cage with zeolite sand as the bedding. They had a huge appetite, especially Pya. She ate tons of pellets, veggies, fruits, meal worms and cuttle bones! Probably because she laid an egg every day, just like chicken hens. :)

7.) Peanut and Potpot, Pitpit, Putput, Petpet.
From left to right: Peanut, Potpot, Pitpit, Putput & Petpet. Peanut is a rescued spice finch, found him as a juvenile in a park. He has a big crush on Pipi but it's been a 1 sided love story. Potpot, Pitpit, Putput, Petpet are four Javan munia finch babies rescued after their nest fell from the tree. No RSPAC in my country so I decided to bring them home and hand feed them with baby bird formula. They are grown up now but still very much cute... Petpet is the smallest and my favorite among these 4 siblings. He reminds me of Pocky because he's somewhat dwarf... and just... have I said he's very cute?? :D I found them 2 years after I found Pipi.

  3. You have a beautiful feathered family. My favorite comics are inseparable and play with me as I can relate a lot with those two. I can relate with all of them.

  6. They are all lovely! Do you use the letter "p" in all your birdies names as a rule? I use "k" for mine: my canaries Kiko, Kelly, Roky, Piki, a budgy called Blacky, and my cockatiel Keiji. My guinea pigs didn't folow that rule (Mei and her daughter Wiwi) but they weren't birds after all. How did you decided to raise quails as pets? I knew a girl who had a pheasant pet, her dad was a hunter, he shot it but since he only hurt it, he didn't had the heart to end it and took it home. His daughter took care of it, and the pheasant was very fond of her: it chirped when she came home and followed her everywhere. My uncle had a white duck called Lucas, they shared a strong bond, they loved each other a lot and used to walk around together, and one of my aunts raised geeses who loved her and followed her around XD Birds are such interesting pets!
